Why so important to shake API Nitrate bottles

The company that makes the API water test kit said the Nitrate #2 bottle has a powder in it that settles to the bottom of the bottle. I forgot what he said the powder was. But he said to VIGOROUSLY shake the bottle for the time indicated in the instructions or your test won't be accurate. And immediately test your water, don't let the bottle sit after shaking it.
 
It's important to shake the bottle because the active ingredient settles to the bottom. If this happens, when you drop in the liquid there is no reagent in the drops, or very little, so the test result is inaccurate. You have to shake up the bottle to make sure your drops work.
