It really depends on how closely the two species are related genetically. You can think of certain hybrids like a horse and a donkey = a mule, or a lion and a tiger = a liger.
 
Not only genetically but behaviorally also. Some animals won't breed because they are receptive at different times or because they're physically incompatable or behaviorally incompatable. That's one way new species are formed. If a population is divided and they diverge over time, if they are put together again they may be able to breed genetically but not behaviorally.
 
Gold, blue, and opaline gouramis are the same species; just color variants.
 
actually arent all dwarf gouramis the same thing, different colors?

but i dont think my kissing and moonlight gouramis would ever mate, they hate each other. and i think breeding habits and rituals (is that the right word) are to far apart than say mammals
 
Yes, cobalt blue, neon blue, fire red, and regular dwarfs are all the same species.
