So I'm going to add some java moss in my tank to try and give baby cherries a chance to hide there and in my packed hornwort.

If that doesn't work, I'd like to set up a low-tech shrimp bowl. I've got an established tank that I could take sand, water, and plants from.

Does anyone have experience with something like this? I'd like to set this up without a filter, air pump, heater, and just a light. Is that unrealistic?

I could easily fill the bowl with plants, making it very densely packed.

Yeah possible

Yes, I have seen this done many times. You may want to pick up some kid of filter but not required. I know that lee's sells a small under gravel filter for fish bowls. Good luck! Be sure to post pictures!

You can easily do this. Use plants as the filter! Hang some pothos vine roots in the tank and you will be doing great!
