I have a 20 gallon tank that is holding my guppy fry it has a thick rock bed that is beinging to grow some alge! My question is I want to get some ghost shrimp but should I quarantine them before adding? I will have to get them from my lfs and I got them before and they had this flesh colored worm moving around in it! Will this hurt my fish or anything?

Sure it wasn't their heart or intestines?

I wouldn't put any odd parasites in my tank so if they had a weird worm I wouldn't use it or feed it to my fish!!!

This isn't my shrimp ,but this is exactly what the worm looked like!! Is it bad?

Uh, looks like a parasite to me. I don't gross out easily but that looks pretty gross.

It seems that is called a Horsehair worm aka Gordiacea, or Gordian worms and they are not good to have in your shrimp or tanks. You should destroy the shrimp and not let the worm get into your tank is preferable.

It seems the creature can live in the host and pop out to mate in water and continue the process all over again. This means nutrition your aquatic friends are supposed to get goes into growing the worm thing.

No matter how you look at it, YUCK!
