I see that a lot of aquariums have no substrate bottom. Can I do the same at home? If so what are the pros and cons? To me it's easier to spot the baby shrimps and less to clean. I am not sure what's bad about it. Thanks!

I have two shrimp tanks (both with neocardina shrimp). One has a very fine layer of black sand and the other is bare bottom. In the latter you can really see how much waste is being generated (and fry are easier to spot). I try to siphon the waste using rigid airline tubing whenever possible in the bare bottom tank.
IMO as long as you are not dependent on using substrate to buffer and maintain the pH at a certain level (e.g. - for Crystal Reds and other caridina shrimp) then you should be fine.

It's easier to clean for sure!
That's how I keep my puffer full time.
All quarantine are bare bottom.
If I purposefully breed, usually that's bare bottom too.

The only con is less area for biological filtration and maybe it's less appealing to the eye.
