I read that I will need snails to keep the bacterial colonies alive, since shrimp have almost no bioload. Do I need snails? How do you take care of snails? (If I need them)

I'll bet there are lots of people who have RCS tanks with no other inhabitants. I happen to also keep assassin snails and corys with mine, so of course have a larger bioload.

Snails are pretty easy keepers, depending on the species. Some need algae, some will eat your plants, some like my assassins need live food. I put part of a cuttle bone into those tanks where I have snails to supplement the calcium they need for their shells.
