So I saw a Craigslist posting about some free snails and contacted the person and they sent me a picture and said they are mystery snails but I'm not sure?

That a ramshorn ether, common brown or black.

So I probably don't want these in my tank as they will overpopulate and eat my plants

They aren't bad but they do breed prolifically yes.

Yep, brown ramshorn. And I agree with brannea if you don't over feed you won't have a problem also you don't need to worry about them eating you plants apple snails are much more likely to do that than the rams are.
