Harmless scavengers and occasional fish food. Worst I've heard about them is that they can eat moss.

From what I've read (researched them when I realized I had them) they are an indicator of good tank health. Apparently they don't fare well in dirty tanks.

+1 they look like Gammarus to me, I've seen people selling them before.
