Can my fancy goldfish survive winter in Oklahoma?
Hi everyone!
I'm new to the forum, and I'm worried about my goldfish. I live in central Oklahoma, and I have a 50 gallon pond nestled against the south side of my house. It's a hard plastic pond, about 18 inches deep in part of it, about 12 inches deep in the other part. I have five fancy goldfish (bubble-eyes, black moors, etc) that I've become really attached to since spring. Will they survive the winter or do I need to move them ito an aquarium inside? Would a de-icer work sufficiently, or will the temperature just be too cold for them? Is a heater a viable option? Thanks for all the help! Crystal |

My thoughts---"if you are attached to them" you better get an aquarium & bring them inside. [acronym:91306c1c20="Just My Opinion"]JMO[/acronym:91306c1c20]!!!
I have had 2 bubble eyes for 2 years now & bring them into the house(already brought them in this year). They are the same age but one is 5 inches long & the other is 3 inches--not measuring the tail. |

I would say bring them inside too. You can evenr go cheap, buy a 50 gallon tub, and use the equiptment you

If the pond was deeper a de-icer would work fine, but because the pond is so shallow you will definately want to bring them inside. The first extended freeze you have and they wouldnt make it. Like Roger suggested, a rubber maid tub and something to oxygenate the water work just fine!

Goldfish are a cold water fish just like koi, both came for carp. If you have a de-icer to allow gas exchange, they will be fine so long at the water doesnt freeze solid.

Fancy goldfish are not tolerant for cold winter weather.Bring them inside. No goldfish will survive in a pond the size you have described. It would need to have an area of at least 3 feet in depth for the fish to obtain enough warmth for survival.Koi and comets, in that order, are cold tolerant.
