new pond
I'm looking to get my parents a koi pond for their 25th. My dad has always wanted one. i've got spaces that are sunny, and spaces that are shady. i want a sizeable one, after all, bigger is better. how much do these things cost to start up? i dont know anything about this hobby, so please dont say it all depends. give me a ballpark figure and ballpark parameters. if you can...
remember, i want it to be nice and as low maintennance as possible. thanks joe

Look at some pond supply sites to get some idea of the ranges of pricing; they vary widely. Then you may give us an idea of what budget range you are thinking.
Koi ponds can be anything over 1,000 gals....and can include waterfalls???; can include [acronym:dca3d27150="Ultra Violet"]UV[/acronym:dca3d27150]'s???; and can include fountains, etc.. Try to give us a starting point. Bernie

Here is my best, honest advice to you: go to the library, check out a few books on pond building, koi keeping, and pond maintanence. "The Complete Pond Builder" by Helen Nash, is a very good reference book, teaches virtually everything you need to know about pond construction, and has many good pictures of ponds being built, and finished ponds. You can also do more research on the internet, Google up some sites, read and learn. One more thing, you should really get your Dad involved in the learning process also. My Dad loves my pond, but once I explained/showed him how much work building/maintaining it is, he didn't want that much work. My folks live close by, so he just comes to my house and enjoys my pond instead. I agree with [acronym:b22e8dcb7b="Crushed Coral (if substrate) or Counter Current (if referring to a Protien skimmer) or cubic centimeter (if referring to a measure of volume)."]CC[/acronym:b22e8dcb7b]. I started off with a $200 pond kit that looked nice. I had $1k into the pond by the end of the summer in plants, lights, waterfeatures, etc. When I built my second pond and waterfall, I think I sunk probably $2k into it so far. This year another grand might go into further improvements. It all depends where you want to go.
