newbie questions

Hi,

I am new here but I was thinking about setting a pond up (this spring) okay what all will I need? I will be able to spend somewhere maybe around $300.00 on it. What all would I be able to get for that amount and what is a good pond size that I could get for that price? I would likely put it in the ground. What all types of fish would I be able to get? I know it depends on pond size but what could I get for that price and have in it with out them over growing? Can you get the pond's already made? or do you have to build them? thanks alot for your time..........SHaun

You could purchase a pre-formed pond maybe around 150-200 gallons with filter and introduce a few comets.Koi would get too large for such a small pond.Comets are next best for cold tolerance. The pond would need to have an area with depth at least 4 ft.This is so the fish can retreat and hibernate to the warmest part of the pond in winter. If you don't have this depth they will need to be taken inside. You will also need a de-icer.This will prevent freeze-over.It will keep a small area of the pond free from ice to allow noxous gas to escape.Farm innovators Ice Chaser is a reccommended brand used in conjunction with the TC-3 thermo cube(this will keep the electric bills lower).Plants will help control algae, especially floating type.Be prepared to do a bit of maintenance.

4 feet? I know Ohio has more severe winters than I do in MD, but my pond is less than 3 feet deep(29inches), and it wouldn't freeze solid if I didn't use a de-icer. I do use a deicer and have no problems overwintering common goldfish, shibunkins, and comets in the pond.

I agree with the rest of what you posted, piranha.
