Pond overflow!

So what does everybody do in the event of alot of rain? Because of the close proximity that my pond is to my patio, I am slightly concerned about it overflowing. Its been raining pretty good here for the past several hours and the pond is up to its banks. I started to syphon some water out (yeah, that first mouthful always tastes incredible )... This method is fine as we are usually always home, just curious what everybody else does in case we happen to be out of town when torrential rains come.

Most of the on line instructionals that I have read suggest a drainage pipe at the max height you want the water level. It can be burried and extended to route the water the direction you want it to go.

Thanks, Squish... I do have some [acronym:7923987078="Plastic pipe"]PVC[/acronym:7923987078] I got for the purpose, just haven't had a chance to install it yet... not quite sure how I'm gonna do it either... I'll mess with it later now that the pond is at an all-time high!

For now..I would take a small power head, attatch a piece of flexible tubing (you can get it at the [acronym:1b55a35b2a="Local Fish Store"]LFS[/acronym:1b55a35b2a]) and then stick the other end in a garden hose. You should be able to do the entire thing for about 30.00 (or less if you have a hose). Drop the power head in, and plug it in. That could even be a long term solution for you. Anytime it gets full, pull out the "drain system" and lower the level of the pond a little.

I did something really simular to this a few weeks ago. My pond had about 2 feet of water in it and it wasnt finished...had to get it out. I have a pump that runs 2800gph...attatched the hose, stuck the other end into a garden hose and ran it down the gutter. Very easy.

I have a piece of [acronym:ebce54e449="Plastic pipe"]pvc[/acronym:ebce54e449] tubing installed with a cap on the end. Then I drilled a hole at the top of where the water is. They make nice fittings that are great for where you put the [acronym:ebce54e449="Plastic pipe"]pvc[/acronym:ebce54e449] through your liner. I don't remember the name, but they extend past the hole you put in the liner, then you clamp down on both sides for a nice secure seal.

My pond is just situated so that overflow goes out on the low side of my yard and runs away from my house and towards the woods. no pipes, just gravity.

Roger... explain the seal around the pipe. I would love to do that but not sure how I would seal the hole.

Go to home depot, there is a fitting like I described that is used for bathtub drains. You can also find these in many pond catologs. Basically, you just put one piece on both sides, and pancake them together on the sides of the liner to create a good seal. I'll try to find you a link.

This guy right here http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDUS...gjm.0&MID=9876

What I did was throw away the Stainless Steel cover, and then just [acronym:48dd3b71ba="Plastic pipe"]pvc[/acronym:48dd3b71ba] glued a piece of pipe on both sides. Run one side to a low place for drainage, and cap the other side inside your pond. Then just drill a hole in the cap where you want your water level to be.
