My first pump lasted 6 or 7 years, partly because I cleaned it regularly. That was a Cal Pump, and so is the new one. It came with good instructions on cleaning and upkeep. there are so many types of pumps, I have no idea how to tell you how to clean it, but if it's from a good manufacturer, it should come with instructions for cleaning. My Cal pump, it has a plastic pre-filter you pop off with a screwdriver, then I pick out the gunk with my fingers, and finish off by spraying out the impeller and innards with a strong spray from the hose. I clean it 2-3 times a month, takes 5 minutes easy.
