Anyone have experience with smaller sunfish species like the Dollar and Orange Spotted? Things like tank size/substrates/decorations aren't something I'm finding a lot of information on.

habitat:

The preferred habitat is slow-moving, heavily vegetated streams and rivers with limestone, sand , or gravel substrates. 40g breeder would be a nice size tank for them

behavior:

A nest-builder that tends to be more solitary than other members of the sunfish family. Males are very aggressive and antagonistic toward other fish in their nesting area. They generally feed on the bottom, but will rise to the surface to feed. The bulk of their diet consists of a variety of plants and animals that are usually associated with aquatic vegetation, brush, or rubble.

Could you overstock the tank like is done with cichlids to prevent aggression? If breeding isn't the goal say 3-4 in a 30-35gal?

Not recommended for the over stock idea. These fish can beat the snot out of any cichlid their size of slightly larger. 40 brooder tank will work fine, a 55 will work better.

Use rocks, drift wood, flower pots to make territories. They will hang in their own turf and only go all over when food hits the water. They love small livebearers as a food source but will take pellets, flake, frozen and other live food.
