Actually it doesn't get any direct light in the summer. The sun rides too high. In the winter the sun is lower and will shine in on the tank a little. The tank does get a lot of natural light just not direct

Natural light will affect algae growth too but just doesn't make algae grow as fast. If the amount of natural/direct light peaks at 3 pm, make the timer turn the light on at around 9-10 am and turn off around 5-6 pm.
