Be careful with Plecos. Common Plecos hit 24". They have huge bioloads just like GF. As they mature they get very spiky. They prefer neutral to lower PH water with driftwood. Opposite of GF.

The main issue is when they get big, if they panic esp after lights out they may injure Fancies by accident.

A customer was furious. His big 10" Pleco freaked out and badly wounded his beloved 10yr old Ryukin one night. The Ryukin died.
The Pleco wasn't being aggressive, the GF just couldn't get out of the way.

I've had at least 3 customers tell me stories of Plecos injuring Fancies.

Just be aware. I don't think they should sell Plecos that hit 2 FEET to most people. Great fish , few people can house adults. Recommended tank is 150g.

I thought pleco catfish were tropical fish?

They are. But they are hard to kill and are often subjected to GF tanks. That's one reason so many people have them. They are sold as beginner fish.

As far as being a cleanup crew, they poop as much or more than they eat :/

They need driftwood
They eat
Cucumber
Spinach
Romaine
Algae wafers
Blood worms
Flakes
Etc.....
They do eat Algae, but only certain kinds. They don't eat poop or rotting food. They need to be fed just like the GF. They like having a cave that they won't get stuck in.

My butterfly tail goldfish. I did a water change and decided to get a picture of them. They'll be going to a bigger pond soon.ImageUploadedByAquarium Advice1406788377.660488.jpg

'scuse the tails, the water is pristine and salted, but they stay shredded. I can't figure it out. There is nothing they can catch on either.

EDIT: Sorry about the dog slobber on the glass as well...

Beautiful fish, especially the first one :) What is it's species name please? I am keen to start a sub tropical tank with a couple of fancy goldfish.....would you say minnows are good tank mates? Thanks

She is a grade B calico ryukin. My plan is to only keep the mnniows till they outlive their lifespan. They only live 2-3,years so they will be gone by the time my goldies are big enough to fit them in their mouth. But I believe if you get the goldies in with the minniows when they are young they get used to having them as tank mates so don't confuse then as food. Danios work well as do variatus platys. I gave 2of these too. But my long term plan is to just keep goldies and danios.

Thank you for your reply :) Your fish look great. I didn't realise danios would be an option, thought they might be a bit fast and possibly nippy to those gorgeous fancies tails! Good idea starting all the fish together to avoid confusion.......fish are friends, not food! ;-)

Danios are temperate fish and can live in heated and unheated tanks. As long as the water doesn't go too low. I live in a warm flat. So never goes below room temperature. They have lived happily with my 6goldies in a 119gallion for over a year. And as for food I feed sinking pellets first to the goldies as they go down for their food I feed mirco pellets for the small danios and minniows and they eat at the surface. Works for me
