How do you heat a pond in winter?

So the fish don't freeze to death. It snow where I live.

From what I understand fish become dormint in the cold and stay on the bottom and no heat is needed

Where are you?

I'm in Ohio, I have a pond that is 5 feet deep. I have goldfish and koi. During the winter I run a de- icer that keeps a hole in the pond, gases can escape. When the water gets below 50 or so the fish go dormant and float down below like submarines.

You have to build it deeper than your freeze depth, ours I think is 2.5 feet.

On a pond I think its called a strainer since you are gonna have bigger debris in it then you would a aquarium

Yes I would definatly use one

Your frost line is 3-4 ft, so it would need to be deeper than that from what I remember when I researched building ponds when I did mine.

I would look up different kinds if filtration and see what you like. I have a savio system that I have found to be good. Had to redo my waterfall as mint grew in there and separated the liner from the housing, they have since redesigned it.

I dont think you feed in winter, in the summer they sell bags of food pellets in garden stores/pet stores

No food once temps get below 50 avg.

Was Reading through threads, & jus wondering my water is 50f first thing in morning but rises throughout the day up to 54 - 56f do I still not feed ?
