Starting a pond

I've been wanting to start a pond now for a while and I finally have a place for it. Can someone point me in the right direction; like basic tips? Should I get a kit?

Nice! How cold does it get in the winter? That should be a factor in the depth of the pond.
What dimensions (length x width) do you have in mind for this?
