Hi all,
I'm planning on starting an aquatic turtle tank and could use some advise. This will most likely be a 45 or 50 long. I currently have three freshwater planted tanks so I'm pretty much use to the basics. This tank will have a Rena X3 filter. Since I live in NY I'm thinking of a red ear slider or whatever you people suggest. I already have the basking area and lights planned out. My question is what is the best type of substrate for baby turtles?
Any advice is much appreciated:):)

you could only really do a mud/musk turtle,all others get too big

Best substrate is some thing either;

A) big so they can't eat it
B) small so if they do it won't matter

Along these lines either large gravel or sand would be your best bet. They are unlikely to eat it but if they ever do it could cause impaction, so that's why it's best to plan ahead.

A musk turtle would fit nicely in a 40 long.
