So i was cleaning my back yard and flipped over some old plywood, 2 find a bunch of red backed salamanders... i grabbed a few, lowered the board, then went back 2 find more when i found this guy!!! I live in maine and this is the first time ive caught a yellow spotted so big!! I was thinking about keeping him and turning an empty 10g i have right now into a terrarium for him?? Thoughts??

My only thought is to be careful with wilds. I don't know much about salamanders, but usually, wild caught anything has a hard time adjusting to captivity and are easily stressed. Be prepared fr that if you decide to keep him.

He is absolutely gorgeous though, I would definitely try it if it was me that found him.

I always had the little red backs growing up and they did ok... my thought was 2 keep him in the basement where it is cooler for a bit... i already have crickets cause i have an african butterfly fish...

Ok... so he is settling in. Everything was gotten locally near where he was found

Pics again... stupid phone.

Spotted are mole salamanders, like marbled or tiger. I'd add a few more inches of soil to allow him to dig a bit if he wants to :)

He has made tunnels through the dirt under the moss... there is an inch or so of dirt...

Ya!!! He is doing great!!! I checked on him earlier and him and the 4 small red backs i kept are all fat and happy... i keep him between the cinder blocks that hold up my 20g tank, which is rarely heated as the heater is broken, so they are pretty cool. I dropped about a dozen small crickets in about a week ago, which are gone. And after i checked on them and had returned the moss 2 its normal position the yellow spotted started squeaking (i know cause i was wondering what the sound was so i flipped the moss back over, and he was in a tunnel and every time i heard the squeak, his head moved) so im guessing he is happy..

Ya!!! So pretty happy about that. He wasnt getting emaciated and the crickets ive been dropping in were disappearing so i figured he was probably eating... but 2 see it and know 100% for sure is a relief!!!

Great to hear! Some just don't like to eat in public.
