from all the reading ive done so far, a lagoon tank would be an ideal start into reef keeping. low to moderate light and water motion and having the lowest initial cost and demand.

my ideas so far:
  • 20 gallon long tank
  • 1x or 2x 65w 50/50 pc lighting
  • 100w heater
  • 2xMJ600's w/ spraybars
  • protein skimmer?
  • 3" DSB
  • 20-30# lr

and my inhabitants:
  • button polyps
  • shrooms
  • leather?
  • green star?
  • blasto?
  • alveopora?
  • banded coral shrimp
  • peppermint shrimp?
  • snail mix?
  • crab mix?
  • caulerpa
  • watchman goby
  • percula clown
  • flame hawk?

anything with a ? is an item i am still unsure about. im planning on this being a peninsula tank, visible from 3 sides. ideas, suggestions, comments? tia!

In a 20 gallon a Coral banded shrimp probably wouldn't tolerate any other shrimp. The goby and percula would get along fine. I'm not positve, but the hawkfish may be a little large and aggressive to keep in a 20 gallon. Definitely get the skimmer and I don't think in a 20 long that the DSB is that important. I have a 20 long with about 1-2" of sand and @25lbs LR and have very low nitrates and little difficulty maintaining good water chem.
