good quality, or bad quality, putting a ball valve at the exhaust port of a pump will help it to last longer. it will not hurt a pump EVER.

Not to jump in, but I;ve heard the complete opposite. That if you are throttling back your pump you are slowly burning it out.

I have a ball valve on mine between the pump and output and mine is dialed back quite a bit since I got a pump that was too much flow.

Thanks!

yep..and you would hear that a lot in the aquarium hobby, because no one researches these things, they just take the word of someone else. this piece of information was obtained from engineers and HVAC professionals. if you get out of the aquarium hobby realm, and use google, you'll find it's true.

You have just saved me from buying a new return pump Doug.LOL I'm gonna get a bcakup eventually but I was worried that I was burning it out.

Appreciate the knowledge, I'm like a sponge. lol

:-D
