Adding Caulpera to a reef tank

I just added 2 small bundles of Caulpera to my 20 gal, coral and cuc only, reef tank. As I understand it, it will help maintain ammonia, phos, etc. I don't have a refugium, so it's just clipped in the back/bottom. I was getting some algae growth which the snails weren't getting to and I have been doing some scraping.
Is the caulpera a good idea, or should I just scrap it?
