These have to be the ugliest things you could put in an aquarium, an interesting focal point. Not sure whether I would want to put my hand in with one

Could such a fish be weaned onto frozen foods or is live feeding required?

Hard to say. If I had to guess, I would say it's possible, but unlikely

I'm sure you could get it to eat silversides if you wiggle them in front of it.

I had a painted angler. For me it only ate frozen or fresh seafood. It is all about the tool you use to feed . I basically made a small fishing pole with an acrylic tube and some fishing line. A lot of patience will be needed to get one that refuses frozen foods to finally eat it.
