Not sure if you need an airstone. Its not the hypo, but either the water chems or the parasite itself that would cause this. If they are breathing heavy, that is a very bad sign.
1. How are you measuring the SPG?
2. what is the PH ?
3. What is the ammonia and nitrite level?
Sure, start the airstone if you wish (on a low setting) but these other issues are more important.
Definately do a large water change 25-30% and buffer "slowly" if the PH is low. Hypo can cause a sudden drop in PH and lack of biological filter can cause a fast spike in the ammonia level.
Also, get that level to .009 (true treatment level) measure with a calibrated refractometer.
