algae pearling?

I have a new tank that is just about done with the cycle, and I bought some live rock from an established tank. it's a nice purple color. I pointed the power head at it to spread it. Behind the powerhead the tops of the old rock are getting green? and tonight when I looked at there were bubbles on it. but only there.

Also one of the crabs seems to like the overflow box.

Ahhh... looks like the dreaded diatom stage! The good news is that normally signals that a tank is nearly done cycling. The bad news is that it hangs around longer than you want it to... but it WILL go away!

When your cycle is complete (0 ammonia, 0 nitrites), put in a good cleanup crew with some astrea and/or trochus snails and they'll have a good time eating up the diatoms. Even if you don't get snails, the diatoms will eventually "burn themselves out" and they'll go away on their own. But the snails will help keep your tank clean and the nuisance algae down to a minimum.

I agree with Kurt. Diatoms it is. Did you use tap water to fill the tank?

yes to the tap water. And I do have a CUC. some came from the original owner, some came with the live rock and some came from the beach.

the readings were looking good. So I should spend the $1.75/gal on the RO water?

ahh, so it's the phosphates. got it.

Yes I would go with RO/DI water. You can get them for about 100 dollars on ebay and other sites. Read this
