Maybe it was because the sand bed was disturbed. It could release ammonia and nitrites into the water.

Sounds like it is WELL on it's way to a good cycle, I'd leave it alone and check the ammonia every other day until it returns to normal and then restock fish (but not all at once)

if the tank water is 1 year old then remove it all and start again.

The good bacteria builds in the filter on the filter media and on the plants and substrate. If u rinsed any of that
( especially filter cartridges) with tap water or it dried out it could have harmed the majority of your BB ( benificial bacteria)Technically as long as you have BB in your filter all of your water can be fresh ( dechlorinated ) Did u rinse the filter cartridges or get new ones??

You'd be mad to keep w year old water ...... The only thing you need to keep wet during transport is the live rock and filter media.....do 50% water changes every day until ammonia comes down

Ok, I misunderstood, the water had been stored for a year? yea listen to the experts,

I thought it was just placed in jars for transport. Sorry.

I believe you were right the first time around dralarms. But either way, the water does next to nothing in terms of bb or cycling....the only thing keeping the old water would prevent is the need to re-acclimate....but then again saving 50% of the water would have done the same trick....plus who knows what the previous owner put in the water....
