Ammonia Question from NOOB

Well obviously I should have done more research because now my tank is cycling with three fish in it... a clown, a trigger, and a puffer... the am levels are pretty high and the nitrates are a bit more than normal too. I already went over how I should care for the tank and let it cycle but I was wondering if I could move my fish to a small tank for the time being... here is what I was thinking.
Buy a 10 or 20 gallon, add a small filter, heater, and power head and let them chill in there for a bit. I know it is small but it is better than them dying from ammonia. Maybe by the time that tank begins to cycle in a week or two the other one will be in much better shape. Is this a stupid idea? I already stated that I am not able to bring the fish back to the store (it was a petco abotu 45 min from me) and I don't have another tank. Is this a feasable idea or will it just do more harm than good?

That wouldn't make much sense because the new tank will still need to cycle the same as your current one. You'll just be moving them into a smaller water volume with harsher conditions.

The best thing would be an established tank. I would ask an LFS to hold them for you till your tank is ready.

My wife and I were happy for twenty years. Then we met.

Atari speaketh the truth...a smaller tank will bulid up ammonia more quickly than the larger tank...unless you planned to buy 3 20gallon tanks and put a fish in each.
Former advisor and planted tank geek...life's moved on though.
