Amonia levels(using the product Prime)

My amonia recently spiked after finding out my water source was loaded with it.[4.0]
Ive been doing water changes with ro water from lfs
And I am using prime untill I completely change out all my water.[doing ten gallons every other day]

My question is will prime keep my fish safe untill then and what do others think of the product?
Also will a protein skimmer be the best added filtration
Its a fish only tank
Dogface puffer
Niger trigger
Ghost shrimp
