a sump is either a small tank or a rubbermaid tub that has various filter media that water trickles through to clean the water. The water overflows into a box and travels through a tube into the filter, After the water goes through the media, in collects in the sump and is pumped back via submersible pump. you do not need to have a sump, because it is lacking in mechanical filtration. you can have canister filters that are excellent in mechanical and good in both biological and chemical filtration

Basically it just takes everything that would be inside or hanging on the back of your aquarium and it puts them out of view in their own little tank. Not necessary but nice to have.
