This is a total noob question. I've had fresh water tanks for a good while and are all well established, now can I scoop some sand out of a fresh water tank or use some filter media out of a fresh water tank to seed a saltwater tank? Or is it completely different?

Oh, I haven't even got the tank yet, just asking questions so I'm prepared to get it started well. Gotta source live rock, maybe online or see what the lfs has in stock. Can I use play sand for substrate or do I need something like argonite?

Playsand would most likely cause a diatom problem. Dry aragonite is the best way to go. You can do a mixture or base rock, maybe 30% live rock and 70% base rock to save some money. The base rock would become live over time just as the dry aragonite sand would become live.

Just asking cause I have spare sand from when I set up my cichlid tank. I'll probably go with the dry argonite. Thanks
