Base to live rock

Want running my tank with rocks so I added some base rock to my tank and my question is about how long does it take for the rock to become live? And how do I tell when it's live ?

4-8 weeks with an ammonia source( either pure ammonia or a shrimp decaying)! Testing ammonia levels, nitrate levels will show when you have enough bacteria to house fish!
