A good skimmer will make a huge difference. I would not skimp here.

ok, thanks....im glad i asked, also i just wanted to clarify....once the tank has cycled and all the levels are correct does this mean that the rock is cured?

Yes, once ammonia and nitrites are zero you're good to go.
