Can my heliofungia thrive on a rock?

I bought a heliofungia (long tentacle plate coral) and I'm told that they should be placed on the sand. The lfs's tend to place them on LR. Will they thrive ok there? TIA.

I could be wrong but, I think the idea is to keep it from touching the rocks. If the flesh gets rubbed by the rocks, it can irritate it and cause necrosis. Just have to be careful of where you place it.

Also if placed on an edge or outcropping they can literally walk off and fall causing damage. LFS place them to best show them off and sell quickly, not usually considering their health.

Cheers
Steve

Yes, they should be placed in the sand substrate. As Steve mentioned, they do "crawl" and can fall off of rock work. They may need some periotic dusting to keep sand off of the top of it.

Came home and the critter fell off of the rock!! You were right. Big bugger was found, tentacles down and very distraught.

Hope he feels better in his new spot - on the sand.
