Given enough lamps in a fixture, you can grow anything. I'd reccomend the most you can get 12-8 lamp fixtures are awesome. Can do most even with a 6 lamp (clams iffy with 6).
 
it also depends on your water depth, but the right T5 fixture is every bit as strong as metal halide.
 
T5HO can work for a wide variety of corals.

Here's my 65gal reef under T5HO lighting (5x 39watt bulbs w/individual reflectors). Various soft, LPS and SPS corals:

I run a T5 12 bulb setup over my 6 foot tank and currently have just about every coral you can think of. All are doing well and placed so that the most light needy corals are closer to the light. :)
