So i've finally broken down and cleaned the 75 gallon. This tank will initially be FOWLR, but I would like to leave my options open to add coral in the future. out of the 75 I had a few pieces of lava rock and some that werent in any tanks. I know these can eventually become live so I will incorporate it somehow with real live rock.

My problem is that when it was in the FW tank it has accumulated "stuff", mostly algae. Is there an easy way to clean it off, or should it even be cleaned off?

I used lace rock in my 29 when I started it. I hit mine with a pressure washer. No soap obviously, but the pressure cleaned it up pretty good and I didn't have any problems with them. If you are cycling the die off would actually help.
