In a new 55gal, is it smarter to cycle with uncured rock? I'm thinking, If I'm waiting 2-4 for the cycle anyhow, why pay extra for cured rock? If I started with 50# uncured and dead sand, will this be a sufficient start? TIA!

50 pounds would be good to start. Often, with uncured rock you get the possibility of actually get more lifeforms than if you got the rock cured. Really depends on where the rock comes from. If you want to mess with uncured rocks, cycling the tank is the best time to do it :)

It is enough to start your cycle but idealy you want 1.5 to 2 lbs LR per gallon to assist w/ filtration. The sand is Ok to use tropical playsand and I would seed it with a cup of LS if possible. The LR will seed the sand but a cup of LS will bring other items to the mix.

Save the money and use uncured, and 50 pounds is plenty.
I used 50 pounds to cycle my 150.
