Hey everyone my tank has been cycling now for about 4 weeks and i believe it is done because the nitrites spiked and now are at 0. My nitrates did not spike but are around 20. My question is about the test kit i am using.

I have the Seachem Basic test kit. It is the one where you put the discs in the water and they turn from yellow to different colors. First off should i be testing for free amonia or total amonia. When i put the disc in the water after about 20 minutes it gets a very dim coloration to it but not all over the disc just in places on the disc. I dont understand if everything has spiked why hasnt the amonia gone to 0. Does anyone else use this test kit?

Ok, a somewhat double post. You are using the test strips.
Now we have a different question so it's not really a double post.
How did you cycle your tank?
