Is there a point at which the ammonia levels can become dangerous when you cycle a tank? Mine is up over 8.5. is that bad?

If you are using uncured LR and want to preserve as much life as possible you should do a series of water changes to bring that down quite a bit.

If you are using pre-cured LR which does not typically have much in the way of hitchikers or base rock, then I would just let it run. Might lose some of the pod population with the cured LR but that can easily be re-seeded later on.

Cheers
Steve
