You don't cycle with fish
Any changes when using the cocktail shrimp method instead?
Generally you don't need to clean mechanical filtrants in the beginning unless it becomes clogged with debris/detritus reducing performance or contributing to excessive DOC
levels. Even then, always use SW
not fresh as it will kill nitrifying bacteria. As the tank matures and stock is added, cleaning should be performed routinely, weekly would be best.
Water changes may be needed but it depends on what else is in the tank. If well cured LR
and no real life additions then no. If fresh rock is added that has many different hitchikers then definately. It will help preserve many of them and will not really prolong your cycle. Depending on the die off, you may need to do water changes daily in the beginning at least.
How is the tank set up?
