Cycling processing.

Hi all, hmm i posted a message few days ago saying that my LR have bad smell, I did not remove it from my tank, I let it cycle but I increase the power head's power output, will the bad smell goes off on its own? I do not wish to do a water change now.

Yes, or to speed it up, I added activated carbon to my sump for about 3 days, and that helped a lot.

Any fish or any corals in there?? If not, you can let it cycle thru, to speed it up, do you have a protein skimmer?? Make sure that is running. Carbon does help. Water changes do help speed the process. If you have fish or corals, water changes are a must at this point

i have to disagree... dont run the protein skimmer until the cycle is over if you have one and water changes will also make it take longer...

The activated carbon should help with the smell. Just remember eventually you'll want to take it out, so you could just try running a HOB with activated carbon if you have one. Just run it until you can tell its helping with the smell. Then you can try running it less and less, like a few times a week to make sure the smell is gone and then eventually take out the carbon and use the HOB for circulation.

IMO running the skimmer or not running the skimmer will have a negligable effect on the cycle itself.

If you can pull out the rocks one at a time and inspect them. Look for dead or decomposing items on the rocks surface. The foul rocks will be fairly easy to find since they will be the stinky ones out of the water. Take a stiff bristle nylon brush and scrub those areas and rinse them in a bucket of saltwater before putting back into the tank. By removing the dead/decomposing items you shoud speed things up some.

did you dip your rocks and cure them before you put them in if not that could be a problem.
