cycling w/base rock

Going to be cycling 100gal reef. plan on starting with 80lbs LR. If I use 40lbs. lifeless base rock, wouldn't this rock be more prone to algae growth? I don't want to waste $120 for LR, when I can get 40lbs for $60
fore base rock. However I do want to do whatever is best for the tank as a whole.

Base rock will be more prone to nusciance algae until it is covered with coraline.

The trick is to put the base rock on the bottom and top it off with the LR. That way, not as much light gets to it and pest algae growth isn't that much of a problem. I did the 180 this way and it worked out well. JMHO.

Thanks.
Sounds like it would be worth it to save the money.
