My heater has been in the tank for quite some time and has a nice buildup for Coralline Algae on it. Can this damage or affect how the heater does its job? I never thought of it until now, but wondering if I should try to scrape off the algae? This in itself may damage the thing, I don't know. :p

It wont hurt it if you don't clean it off ... I have never cleaned mine off when they were in the tank they just blended to the back ground ... If you insist on cleaning it off soak in white vinegar and use a scrub and toss just becareful if it is glass not to scratch it as it quite possibly will damage the integrity of the unit.Rinse well after soaking in vinegar ....
