You will need some quality test kits (Salifert or Elos) and you'll have to know your parameters. I can't stress enough how dangerous it is to blindly dump in things.
Proper parameters will cause corals to grow at the correct rate, not more of one thing or the other. In other words, more is not better.
That said, lighting is very important as well. Some folks may have inadequate lighting and corals will survive, but just not grow much, or at all.
Flow is another important factor. You need the correct flow for the coral in question.
Bribo is correct in that in many cases, a weekly water change regimen is enough to keep parameters in check.
