you don't need live rock as that gets expensive fast
base rock is your best choice it's cheaper no bad hitchhikers and it will become live over time
some places have better deals on base rock starting at $1.50 per pound with free shipping

Yea , I found some good "dry rock " pretty decent price , gonna get at least 60-65 lbs . 50 - 55 lbs for tank and 10 for refugium

Make sure the rock is porous for good bacteria to live. I highly recommend drilling your tank and having a sump.

Empty 55 gallon what to do ?

Ok , wife finally " made her mind up " on doing the 56 gallon column tank as our Reef tank . Deff going to have to upgrade lights as it only has a single T5 ballast , also has a glass top . Was thinking about doing open top , as for Refridgium I found a cheap 20 gal long tank , my LFS has I believe it was an instant ocean brand skimmer , looked like it was a HOB one so I'm going to go elsewhere for that .. I've seen ppl use the octopus brand .. As for salt going with instant ocean , unless you guys/gals recommend something else ... Substrate they carry sand and crushed coral for marine only , 17 bucks for 25lbs bag and they have Caribbean live sand for 22 bucks for 20lbs ...... Prolly going with the other sand .. Doing dry base rock haven't ordered any yet , 65 lbs for 120 bucks or something like that ... Now do I need any other filtration aside from the sump and rock ??
