Filter from Freshwater tank

I read in one of the posts that one can use the used filter from an old tank in the new tank to speed up the cycling. Can I use a used filter from a Freshwater tank? If yes, where can I place the filter? Drop it in the tank or can I put in sump?

Two different bacteria types. If you used a SW filter then it could help but a FW one would have to start from scratch.

Second that. Media from another tank can be very helpful, but you can only go from salt to salt or fresh to fresh. you can't go from freshwater to saltwater or vice versa.

Sorry!
