We're now considering a 30 gallon FOWLR and are slowly building supplies and gaining information. We'd like a small school, a couple of others (I like the look and price of yellow-tail damsels or maybe a clown or 2?), snails, shrimp, possibly a hermit crab? - does anyone have suggestions or reccomendations on good, hardy choices for a first FOWLR community?

Hi. :)

You're kinda limited to a few fish in a 30g tank, most likely not enough to get a school going. damsels are pretty but can be very aggressive and territorial so just keep that in mind.

My first tank was a 29g regular tank and I had: 2 b&w clowns, a royal gramma, a lawnmower blenny and a pink spotted watchman goby. That pretty much filled me up stock wise.

Snails and shrimp are up to you, peppermints shrimp, cleaners and fire shrimp are some good ones to look at.
