I'm doing a 20% pwc today and also cleaning my canister filter. I tested my nitrates and they were at 20!

My bio load is low and I don't understand why they are so high. Would a protein skimmer help with my nitrates by removing some of the debris in the water?

How often do you clean out your canister filter? They can be super breeding grounds for nitrates. I use one on my 55g sw and I have 0 nitrates, so it can be done.

I have a mix of many different saltwater fish amongst my tanks, but I love my Tangs most of all.

Thats sounds like a solid schedule. I use a skimmer as well as the canister, how big is your tank again? maybe a skimmer would be helpful

They aren't very expensive. You can get a hand-held unit or an in-line unit you plumb into your system. I got both with my RO/DI. The inline unit will let me know when the filters need to be changed by beeping and flashing a light. I do tests with my water also with the hand held to make sure everything is good. Plus I can take it around town with me and test other water
