LoL the lack of live rock reminds me of when I started mine (about 2 years ago). It took me along time to get all the rock, and even now I add a piece here and there. Good luck on the tank!!

I may take it off and put 4" wide electrical tape across the back... But 1st I have to bring down the nitrates and nitrites...

You could get the reef saver from brs I think it's like 2.50lb an its dry so no need to cure. I have 40# in my 38 gallon. You can see in profile picture album

being that its a 48" tank, id look into a quad-bulb t5 setup
coralife- Amazon.com: Coralife 08607 Lunar Aqualight High Output T5 Quad Lamp Fixture, 48-Inch: Pet Supplies

zoomed t5HO- ZooMed AquaSun Quad T5 HO Light Fixture - Petfood.com

running quad-bulbs will give you some decent options for corals and placements... may not be able to do a high level clam but it may be possible.
also take that bottle of chem back. theres no reason to be adding chems at this point to be removing nitrites/trates.a well built, fully-cycled tank shouldnt need removal chems like that
