Quick question: when I clean out the filter sponge on the back of my fluval, should I also throw out the water in the filter or dump it back into the tank? There tends to be detritus in it and sometimes live things like copepods or tiny shrimp-like things. I don't want to lose good critters if I can avoid it.

Siphon out the detritus and your good. A small airline would probably work best for this.
